Daddy's Hands

The saying, "Daddy's little girl" rings true for me.  My father has always held a special place in my heart.  He has taught me so many valuable lessons throughout my life and continues to provide insight that I treasure.  He is kind, loving & the hardest working man I know.  When I think back on some of the things I've learned and who was the first person to teach them to me, the answer usually is my dad.

Running a farm and having 5 kids roaming around would prove to be a challenge for most people but that was just what life was for my father.  Between him and my mother, they ran a dairy farm to make a living and provided for the children they had.  Not only did my dad manage this, but he also took the time to bond with us all in unique ways.

One of my fondest memories as a child was when my dad would need a particular tool to fix something in the barn and would ask me to run up to the machine shed to get it.  He would literally time me on his wrist watch and made that mundane task into a fun game for me.  Instead of telling me to get him something, he made it engaging and rewarding for me.  I can thank my father for my driven nature to race against the time that would tick away on the clock during races.  He made me a better athlete/runner without even knowing it!

Another first that my father taught me how to do was whistle.  While milking cows dad would always be humming a tune, making up songs or whistling.  I was daddy's little girl so I naturally wanted to hum, sing & whistle like him.  The only thing I couldn't do was whistle.  Dad would stop in the middle of milking to take 2 minutes here and there to show me how to do it.  Before long, I was whistling right along side of my daddy.

Being a farmer meant working 24/7 and 365 days a year.  My father would work from before sun up until long after sun down.  He was always fixing something, doing crops or milking cows.  There was never a lazy day in his life.  That is just how my dad is...working, working, working.  I attribute my hard working attitude, determination & drive to my dad.  He provided an awesome example for me to follow.  I wouldn't have been able to do half of the things I've accomplished without that "can do" spirit I gained by watching him.

I could go on and on about all of the things my dad taught me through the use of his hands, heart & mind.  Even though I've grown into a young woman and he gave me away at my wedding last fall, I will forever remain daddy's little girl.  He is always going to be closest to my heart.  I've strived to make him proud of the person I've become and I hope that he appreciates the qualities I posses came from simply being his daughter.  I am grateful for his guidance, respect & love that has always remained strong.

You never truly understand the love your parents have for you until you become a parent yourself.  I can full heartedly say I now know the overwhelming emotion of love you feel for your own and how my parents feel for me.  I can only hope that my son feels for me the way I feel for my parents.  I want to be able to teach him all of the things my parents gave me through my childhood: the ability to love with everything you posses, be honest, gracious, accepting, hard-working, dedicated, persistent, humbled, determined and lend a helping hand when it isn't asked of you.

{Dad: I treasure the incredible bond we share and want to thank you for always being there for me.  You and mom have always been my biggest supporters and fans.  I am blessed to have had the childhood you provided and the wonderful life lessons that came with it...all the love in my heart!}

The lyrics to the following song have always stuck with me and remind me of my dad.  You can tell a lot about a person by their hands.  His have years of stories from being a husband & father that are beatiful memories for me and my family.

Daddy's Hands songwriter: Holly Dunn

I remember Daddy´s hands, folded silently in prayer.
And reaching out to hold me, when I had a nightmare.
You could read quite a story, in the callouses and lines.
Years of work and worry had left their mark behind.
I remember Daddy´s hands, how they held my Mama tight,
And patted my back, for something done right.
There are things that I´ve forgotten, that I loved about the man,
But I´ll always remember the love in Daddy´s hands.

Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love in Daddy´s hands.

I remember Daddy´s hands, working 'til they bled.
Sacrificed unselfishly, just to keep us all fed.
If I could do things over, I´d live my life again.
And never take for granted the love in Daddy´s hands.

Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love in Daddy´s hands.

Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love .....
In Daddy´s hands

Like My Mother Does

Sometimes I wonder if my mother truly knows the deep amount of appreciation and love that I hold in my heart for her.  There are just some things that go without saying but why not say them sometimes too?  This post is a reflection of some of the great, wonderful & loving attributes my mother possesses and has shown/given to me through the years.

As I get older I find myself becoming more and more like my mom.  This is said as being a good thing.  I love everything about her.  I am lucky in the sense that I have always had a wonderful relationship and bond with my mother.  We never went through that stage of fighting or hate when I was a teenager.  She has always tried to show me how to live by providing an example of herself.  She may not even know that she taught me some of the things I learned because she didn't activity try to teach me lessons; but rather, I observed and emulated her.

My mother taught me to be gracious and humble.  I would see her kindness shining while talking to strangers or helping those in need.  She would never boast of the good things she did, she would simply do them.  I would think to myself, I want to be like that.

She taught me to be loving and accepting.  I don't recall her ever looking down upon someone because of materialistic values.  Her spirit is non-judgemental.  She does not judge due to the way a person looks or lives; she sees people as equals.  I would think to myself, I want to be like that.

My mother taught me to find the positive in everything and to have patience.  My entire life my mom has always been encouraging.  "You can do it Britt!" or "Great job hun!" is what I would hear.  I was surrounded by hugs, high fives & kisses.  When I would fail at something she would be there to tell me to try again and keep my chin up.  You could say this is also where I got my persistent attitude.  {I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.  Thomas A. Edison}  I would think to myself, I want to be like that.

She taught me the importance of my inner worth and beauty.  I was a tomboy as a kid and she would constantly remind me that God made me that way.  That there was something hidden within being a tomboy.  I now know it helped me be rough and tough on the farm and that transpired into my attitude in sports.  I wasn't afraid of hard work in order to succeed.  I would think to myself, I want to be like that.

Out of all of the years I spent growing up and watching my mother I was continually learning from how she would handle situations and think to myself, I want to be like that.  Now that I am an adult I can say that I am like that.  I am loving, driven, gracious, humbled, confident, whitty, funny, smiley, persistant, understanding, accepting, positive, strong and hard working... just like my mother!

{Mom, thank you for being a wonderful guiding light in life and being a amazing example of how to live.  I attribute all of the good that is within me to you & Daddy.}

Nothing says it better than the lyrics to this song, please take the time to read it and fully appreciate these songwriters' ability to capture a topic like this so beautifully!

Like My Mother Does Songwriters: Nathan Chapman;Elisabeth Rose;Nicole Williams

People always say I have a laugh
Like my mother does
Guess that makes sense
She taught me how to smile

When things get rough
I've got her spirit, she's always got my back
When I look at her I think
I want to be just like that

When I love I give it all I've got
Like my mother does
When I'm scared, I bow my head and pray
Like my mother does

When I feel weak and unpretty
I know I'm beautiful and strong
Because I see myself
Like my mother does

I've never met a stranger, I can talk to anyone
Like my mother does
I let my temper fly, but she can walk away
When she's had enough

She sees everybody
For who they really are
I'm so thankful for her guidance
She's helped me get this far

When I love I give it all I've got
Like my mother does
When I'm scared I bow my head and pray
Like my mother does

When I feel weak and unpretty
I know I'm beautiful and strong
Because I see myself
Like my mother does

She's a rock, she is grace, she's an angel,
She's my heart and soul, she does it all

When I love, I give it all I've got
Like my mother does
When I'm scared, I bow my head and pray
Like my mother does

When I feel weak and unpretty
I know I'm beautiful and strong
Because I see myself
Like my mother does

Like my mother does
I hear people saying
I'm starting to look
Like my mother does

Foods You Should Be Buying

As a lot of you know from being my Facebook friend, I am in the middle of training for some road races coming up.  In preparing for them I have been researching a lot more about eating clean (healthy) and have found that a number of foods are best for your general overall health, low in calories & rich in antioxidants/ vitamins/ minerals/ protein/ fiber. They promote a better you which is always good.

Whether you are training for a race, trying to lose weight or simply want to live a healthier lifestyle, you should consider introducing the foods I am going to list in this post into your diet.

Next time you go to the grocery store and see a box of oreos you need to: slap your hand, tell yourself NO and proceed to find some of the following:

Walnuts
Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids, which protect your heart and boost your brainpower.

Almonds
The monounsaturated fats and vitamin E in almonds work together to cut cholesterol.

Macadamia Nuts
In addition to containing healthy fats like other nuts, macadamias also pack in an extra dose of filling fiber.

Yogurt
Yogurt is a good source of calcium, plus probiotics for gut health. Go for the Greek variety: It boasts all of the benefits of regular yogurt plus double the protein.

Blueberries
All fruits are great for diets thanks to their water content and key antioxidants and vitamins. Blueberries, however, are a true standout—studies show they may help rev metabolism and lower blood pressure.

Whole Grains
Whole grains are packed with fiber, iron, and vitamin B.

Leafy Greens
All vegetables are low in calories, chock full of vitamins and nutrients, and high in fiber.

Celery
One of nature's lowest-calorie foods at about five calories a stem, also it packs a ton of nutrition.

Green Tea (Unsweetened)
Green tea is high in an antioxidant called ECGC, which may reduce the risk of most cancers and promotes fat burning.

Watercress
Lacks calories and it's loaded with vitamins A, C and K.

Kiwi
Here's a fun fact: Kiwis are actually giant berries.  They pack fiber, potassium and vitamin E, as well as more than a day's worth of vitamin C.

Cottage Cheese
Containing about one-fifth of the calories you'll find in most cheeses, cottage cheese is a clear low-calorie winner in the dairy department.

Green Bell Pepper
In just one cup of chopped bell pepper you'll get more vitamin C than you would from an orange at about only a third of the calories.

Radish
In general all varieties of radishes share an abundance of vitamin C and help facilitate the digestive process.

Star Fruit
Is high in vitamin C and contains three grams of dietary fiber. It's also a great source of polyphenols, antioxidants that fight cardiovascular inflammation.

Cabbage
One cup is loaded with a type of isothiocyanate called sulforaphane, which increases your body's production of enzymes that disarm cell-damaging free radicals. Sulforaphane actually boosts your levels of these cancer-fighting enzymes higher than any other plant chemical, according to Stanford University scientists.

Cauliflower
The florets in this ivory cluster contain detoxifying compounds called isothiocyanates, which offer protection against forms of prostate cancer.

Tomato
Tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, the phytochemical that makes them red, and they are a prostate protector and help eliminate skin-aging free radicals caused by ultraviolet rays.

Strawberry
Packed with antioxidants, which protect you against cancer and memory loss, and immunity-boosting vitamin C, these little rubies make for a perfect low-calorie sweet treat.

Why I Work Out

I have gotten asked several times since I started running and working out again on a regular basis why I'm doing it.  Are you training for something?  Are you trying to lose weight?  Are you going to personal train again?  Are you bored?  Why I'm doing it is always being questioned.  Do I really have to have a particular reason to work out?  Nope...I have lots of reasons why I work out!

to be heathly.  feel better.  get a solid core back.  not have a muffin top in spandex.  run competitively again.  set personal goals.  break those goals.  be ripped.  live longer.  have my son be proud to call me his mom.  set an example.  to let haters hate.  feel sexy.  be stronger.  eliminate cellulite.  have my husband be proud to call me his wife.  look good naked.  get that natural runner's high from endorphin release.  to make myself proud.  to feel self worth.  believe that I can.  win a road race.  have arms worthy of envy.  be inspirational.  to say yes I am a mom and I look this good.  wear a tiny bikini.  have a strong heart.  break mental barriers.  have me time.  to not get winded doing simple things.  clear my thoughts.  relieve stress.  push my limits.  satisfy my competitive side. have more energy.  to be happy.

All of these things are reasons why I choose to work out and run.  Whether it was born in me or it is just a part of the personality I've developed over the years; this is why I do what I do and what makes me who I am.

After reading all the reasons why I work out, I would like to pose the question: What is your excuse not to?  Why wouldn't you want to accomplish, feel or say any of the things I listed?  I have the respect for my body and myself to treat it better than letting it get unhealthy.

20 Reasons Why I'm F****** Awesome

First off, to answer the question you are all asking yourselves...Yes, yes I did just go there.  I am going to be boastful, self-centered, proud, arrogant, conceited & full of myself for one of the select few times in my life.

Let's be honest, we all think we are pretty awesome some days!  We are taught to be modest & humble and that's all fine and great but sometimes you just need to throw it out there and let everyone know how  f****** awesome you are! I believe it is truly OK to be proud of something you've accomplished.  Go ahead and toot your own horn from time to time.  The thing that distinguishes you from being humbly proud and an egotistically ass is how frequently you are talking yourself up like you are God's gift to everyone & everything!  Celebrate yourself and let others know when you are awesome too.

Here are my top 20 reason why I think I'm pretty f****** awesome (hopefully you do too):

1| I'm left handed
2| Drove zamboni in college
3| NCAA Track & Field Champion
4| I birthed another human being
5| Grew up on a farm
6| Named my son Cruz
7| Can fold a paper airplane with my feet
8| Have my parents' initials tattooed on me
9| Fastest mile time is 5:23
10| I have a kind & caring heart
11| Married to a plumber and never have to worry about unclogging my tub drain
12| Not ashamed of who I am
13| Willing to chase a dream
14| I have an unbelievably supportive family
15| I get to be called: Mommy
16| My friends are kick ass
17| My sarcasm
18| I have an ability to make people laugh
19| Can you say MILF?
20| I get drunk off 2 drinks max, impressive isn't it!

FYI: This post is more of a funny/haha and not an actual dead-serious observation of myself.  These things make up who I am and I'm proud of it!  You should be proud of who you are too :)

Things I Wish I Could Do

Call this part bucket list, part goals & dreams, some aspirations or anything else along those lines.  These are all things I wish I could do, would have learned to do and secret dreams of mine!  By no means am I complaining about how my life currently is because I feel incredibly blessed to be where I am at and with the people who are in my life.  This collection of thoughts include somethings that I still aspire towards achieving someday and others that are just the dreamer inside of me.

Without too much more discussion, here is my list of things I wish I could do:

1| Play piano
2| Run a marathon
3| Read sheet music
4| Fluently speak a second language
5| Hike/climb the Rocky Mountains
6| Be able to do that really loud finger whistle (the one w/ your fingers up to your mouth!)
7| Participate in a duathlon
8| Squat over 225 lbs. (sounds silly but my max out is 225 lbs & I want to beat it!)
9 | Win a road race or at least come in first for overall women
10| Sing well... like hit notes, not be pitchy or "tone deaf"!
11| Write an article or give a speech that moves people to tears & provides inspiration
12| Write a book/novel
13| Publish a book/novel that I've written
14| Knit something
15| Make a perfect creme brulee
16| Go wine tasting while in Italy
17| Say "no" and don't feel bad about it
18| Read a trilogy series page for page/beginning to end
19| Do the warrior dash
20| Use my last year of eligibility for indoor & outdoor collegiate track & field

Perhaps I will be able to check some of these off through out the years and others will remain a dream forever.  The most important thing is that I keep dreaming and I hope all of you do the same.  No matter how big, small, outrageous, unattainable, sensible or ridiculous your dreams are, at least you have an imagination and passion to keep them alive.

peace & love

Kicking My Own Ass

Those of you out there in internet land that know me pretty well, know that I have always been an athletic girl.  I had been involved with sports for the majority of my life and had always had a very structured workout schedule.  Well, times change and change can be hard!

Since I graduated college in 2008 and got away from the grueling collegiate workout plan of a track & field athlete, I've found myself getting soft, gaining a little weight and becoming winded going up a flight of stairs.  I had the excuse of, "I just had a baby" for awhile but now that my baby is 3 years old, that excuse hardly applies anymore.  Darn it!

I've been struggling with keeping motivation to continue on a workout plan.  The thrill of competitions were what drove me to work so hard for so many years but now that part of my life has past and I find it so hard to keep working out.  I have personal goals of how I want to feel and how I want to look but that only goes so far.  It is incredibly easy to blow off going to the gym or going outside for a run and say, "I'll do it tomorrow."  I finally got sick of saying that to myself and decided I needed to get back into working out and find something to help keep me on the right track.  It is very easy to listen to that voice inside of your head telling you to stop, to walk, to quit, to eat that candy bar, to drink a beer or two, to do ANYTHING BUT EXERCISE!  I've had many conversations with that voice over the past 6 months and I think I'm finally starting to win.

I have to give my sister, Shannon a big thanks for going out on many runs with me over the past month and keeping me motivated!  It is a lot easier to go with someone than to make yourself go alone.  It was hard in the beginning to get started because I knew that I would be super sore and would hardly be able to walk or even sit down on the toilet to go tinkle!  Once I got over the initial soreness I started to feel the boredom set in.  That is when I started switching up my workouts and running trails.  A change of scenery was just the thing I needed.

For me, the biggest incentive to workout has been starting to compete in road races again.  It has been many years since I last seriously competed in 2 mile & 5K races.  I am back to a place in my life where I'm not on a HS or college team and have the liberty of focusing solely on road races.  Although I've only just begun on this new health/wellness plan for myself, I am excited to keep it going.  I feel tons better now that I'm making healthier choices in my life.  I'm feeling stronger & more confident.  I am excited to put on a two piece bikini in another month or two.  I am working on getting that body I once had back!  I have been hard on myself but that is exactly what I need to keep at it.  I don't need a coach to kick my ass anymore, I'm doing that myself these days!

Thanks to all of you that have given support & encouragement, thanks to my sister for working out with me and thanks to my husband for watching the little one while I go out & put my time in on the trails.

peace & love

Blistered big toes = doing work!

These are mama arms from toting around a toddler but overall my body is getting trim...will have ab pics to share in due time!  P.S. don't you love all the train tracks in my living room?  Hahaha, being a mother of a boy is awesome!

Seriously...I can NOT take a composed picture of myself.  I continually feel the need to make faces, damn it.  At least I can laugh at myself while ohers are laughing at me too.
